Macramé
Macramé is a craft technique that involves creating decorative items by knotting cords or strings in various patterns. It’s simple to start, requires minimal tools, and can be used to make wall hangings, plant hangers, bags, jewelry, and more.
Basics
- Essential knots (square knot, lark’s head, spiral knot, gathering knot)
- Materials you need (cord size, tape, accessories)
Lark’s Head Knot
Use: To attach your cords to a dowel, ring, or branch.
How to tie:
- Fold your cord in half.
- Place the loop behind your dowel/ring.
- Pull the two loose ends through the loop toward you.
- Tighten.

Square Knot
Use: The most important macramé knot — forms flat patterns.
A square knot uses 4 cords: Middle two = stationary, Outer two = working cords
How to tie:
- Bring the left cord over the two middle cords and under the right cord.
- Bring the right cord under the two middle cords and up through the loop on the left.
- Pull tight. (This is half of a square knot, called a half knot.)
- Repeat in reverse:
- Right cord over the middle cords
- Left cord under and up through the loop
- Tighten.

Half Knot Spiral
Use: Creates a twisted rope-like effect; very common in plant hangers.
How to tie:
- Start the same as a square knot.
- Tie only the first half knot repeatedly (always left over right — or always right over left).
- Because you’re not alternating sides, the knots twist naturally into a spiral.
